Before you take on paying clients in the UK, it's worth knowing what's required and what clients and gyms expect. This guide covers the basics. Always confirm details with the official body, as rules change.
Registration
- The UK has no legal licence for personal trainers. The usual standard is a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification from a recognised awarding body.
- CIMSPA runs the professional register for the sector. The old REPs UK register closed in 2021.
Insurance and checks
- Public liability and professional indemnity insurance are standard, and most gyms ask for proof.
- Trainers who work with children or vulnerable adults may need a DBS check. Many home-visit trainers hold one anyway.
- Some councils require a licence or permit for commercial fitness in parks. Check with your council.
